Welcome to our Cabo Verde website. Thanks for dropping by! We love it here, and so will you 🙂
“Cape Verde”, now more correctly and respectfully known as Cabo Verde is a democratic republic nation comprising an Archipelago of 10 main islands in the Atlantic Ocean. They lay between 560-840 km from the coast of West Africa and have a combined land mass of approx 4,033 square kilometres (1,557 sq mi).
The archipelago of The Republic of Cabo Verde has 10 islands and several islets, divided into two groups: Barlavento (windward) islands and Sotavento (leeward) islands.
The islands of the Barlavento group are Sal, Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau and Boa Vista. Those in the Sotavento group are Maio, Santiago (Praia the Capital), Fogo, and Brava. Only Santa Luzia is uninhabited. Sal, Boa Vista, and Maio have a flat and arid landscape, whilst the other islands are generally rockier with more vegetation.
In 2013, the country’s delegation to the U.N. informed it that other countries should no longer use “Cape Verde” or any other translations of Cabo Verde as part of its official name. The Government requested that everyone should use Republic of Cabo Verde as the country’s official name. They determined that it would thenceforth use the Portuguese name Cabo Verde, both for official purposes, including at the United Nations, even when speaking or writing in English. We respect this request, creating appropriately named new websites.
